Obituary: Death of Mrs. Spencer TAYLOR
Mrs. Spencer TAYLOR died at 10:30 last night at the family residence on North Main street, of a complication of diseases. She was born in Pennsylvania 71 years ago the coming December, and came to this city over 50 years ago, and here she resided until her death. She was the mother of nine children, all of whom with her husband survive her. Of the children, all are married except the two youngest boys.
She was a member of the Christian church, and the pastor of that congregation, Rev. Samuel B. MOORE, will conduct the funeral at the church at 2:30p.m. Sunday.
The remains will be intered in the East Cemetery.

Thursday morning, 10 o’clock.Internment Forest Hill Cemetery. Mr. TAYLOR is survived by his wife, Martha, of the home. His daughters, Mrs. R.A. ALLEN [Mary Elizabeth m. He married Martha Elizabeth JACKSON on Nov 13, 1871 in Jacksonville, Morgan Co., IL. He died in Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO on Apr 24, 1923 of Bronco-Pneumonia caused by Influenza.

Obituary: Spencer TAYLOR, one of Jacksonville’s old and respected citizens, passed away at 11 o’clock Friday evening at the family residence on North Mainstreet. The deceased was 71 years of age and is survived by a large family of children, namely, William, George, John, Martin and Lewis TAYLOR of Jacksonville; Anderson TAYLOR of Kansas City [MO], Mrs. Thomas BARRETT, of Monticello, and Mrs. David WILSON, of Virginia. His wife passed away over a year since.
Mr. TAYLOR was born in Lexington, Ky., where he passed his boyhood days and where he received his early education. Early in life he came to Jacksonville and established the business on North Sandy street, of which he was the head up to the time of his death. He was a devout and consistent member of the Christian church, having allied himself with that religious body early in life.
The funeral services will be held at the family residence, No. 840 North Main street, on Monday at 2 o’clock p.m. Friends of the family are invited.

Obituary: Well Known Resident Expires Suddenly in Hotel in Raleigh - News Received Here by His Family Physician Dr. ROWE - Funeral at Franklin
Word was received in the city Friday morning of the death of Orien E. TANDY which occurred suddenly some time Thursday evening in a hotel in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The message containing the sad news was received by Dr. Edward Rowe for many years Mr. TANDY’S physician who conveyed it to Mrs. TANDY at her home in the Cherry apartments.
Mrs. TANDY had received a letter just a few days ago saying he was not feeling well, but did not think it was anything serious. So news of his death completely prostrated her and was as well a great shock to his countless friends in this city and county.
Orien E. Tandy was the son of Dr. W. M. and Jane E. TANDY and was born in Franklin, June 23, 1865. He grew to manhood in Franklin and practically all his life was spent in Morgan county.
He was united in marriage in Franklin January 17, 1892, to Miss Myrtle WRIGHT of that place who survives together with one son, George W. TANDY, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and one grand daughter, Elizabeth Boyd TANDY.
He also leaves one sister, Mrs. J. W. T. STEWART, of Franklin, two half sisters, Mrs. James CRIM of Hannibal, Mo.; Mrs. George HARNEY of Franklin, and one half brother, Edward TANDY of Jacksonville.
Took Up Teaching.
He attended the Franklin schools and later graduated from Illinois Normal. He then took up the profession of teaching for many years he taught in various schools thruout the county. He gained a fine reputation as an instructor and in 1900 took a position with the Rand-McNally Publishing company in Chicago.
When Mr. TANDY had been with this firm a few years it was evident that he had entered the work for which he was eminently fitted. Few men in the entire country had the grasp of educational affairs that was his. He had the ability to so explain the merits of a school book that not only it was clear, but also proved most interesting as well.
He was soon assigned to southern territory and in his work had visited practically every southern state. He advanced rapidly until he was one of the leading agents of the company and became recognized as an authority on school books.
Early in life Mr. TANDY united with the Christian church in Franklin and always took an active part in church work. He also took an active interest in fraternal orders and so became a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows and Jacksonville Lodge No. 682 Elks. In all of these orders he became familiar with the ritualistic work and teachings.
For a number of years he served as an instructor in the Odd Fellows. He was widely known as an orator of great ability and during his travels he made many fraternal addresses in various parts of the country for which he received the highest commendation.
Interested in Boys.
The most outstanding characteristic in the life of O. E. TANDY was his interest in young men and boys. Perhaps it was because of his work as a teacher coupled with the additional fact that his only child, a son, was devoted to athletics. But he was an ardent supporter of all sports and especially football, basketball, and baseball. He never missed a contest unless it was absolutely unavoidable. He took especial interest in the local high school where his son graduated and many boys who attended Jacksonville high school can testify to his generosity and his interest in their welfare.
He was a familiar figure at every baseball, football or basketball game played here in the last decade and was always rooting for the home team. During the four years his son was at the University of North Carolina he took great pride in his achievements and was always present during those years at the big annual game of the university with the University of Virginia.
Politically Mr. TANDY was affiliated with the Democrats party and was always prominent in its councils. He was well regarded and was called upon frequently to make addresses and was always found ready and willing to go.
Few men had greater acquaintance than Mr. TANDY. He was of kindly impulses and every ready to extend aid in time of need. He filled a large place in the life of the city and county and the influence of his life will be felt thru the years to come.
Mrs. TANDY received word Friday that her son and his wife had started from Raleigh with the remains of Mr TANDY and will arrive here probably Sunday. No definite funeral arrangements have been made. However, the services will be held in Franklin in accordance with the oft-expressed wish of the deceased.

Obituary: Mr. Asahel Thayer, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Waverly, died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. George W. Crooker, in Taylorville, on Saturday last, Oct. 27th. His remains were brought to this place for interment, and on Tuesday morning were followed to the grave by a large number of citizens, all the places of business in town having been closed on the occasion. Mr. Thayer was a native of Amherst, Mass., and was born on the 10th of February, 1790. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and we believe the oldest Mason in the State, having united with the order in 1813. At one time he was extensively engaged in carriage manufacturing in Amherst, and whilst Gen. Jackson was president he constructed from the timbers of the old frigate Constitution a magnificent carriage which he presented to the old hero, for whom he had conceived sentiments of the most unqualified admiration. Mr. Thayer came to Waverly about thirty-five years ago and engaged in merchandise, and continued in business until January last, when old age warned him that the days of his strength had departed. He accordingly, but not without some reluctance, for his energies knew no curbing, retired from active life - his son succeeding him in trade.
Mr. Thayer was an earnest christian, and in all the years of his residence in our midst was regarded as a safe counselor, a wise and faithful friend, and a man whose word was as good as his bond, and whose integrity was above suspicion.
We hope to be able next week to give a brief sketch of Mr. Thayer’s life, as we feel that a more satisfactory record than we have had an opportunity to prepare would be of interest to our readers.

Obituary: Mrs. Hannah Harmina THOLEN passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 1928 at 9:30 p.m. at her home northwest of Chapin. Her death was due to heart disease. She was the eldest daughter of Dietrich and Anna DIECKHOFF OMMEN. She was born near Meredosia, March 24, 1856. She was married Jan. 4, 1877 to Henry F. THOLEN. This union was blessed with three sons and one daughter, who survive. They are William of Winchester, Edward of Bluffs, George on the homestead and Lydia at home. She is also survived by three step-sons, John of Webster, N.Y., Fred of Barry and Herman of Meredosia; also 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. “Edith Fishel”
Mr. THOLEN passed away Jan. 26, 1905. She also leaves to mourn her passing four brothers and five sisters; Herman OMMEN, Bluffs; John OMMEN, Diller, Neb; Henry OMMEN, Butler, Okla.; Mrs. Katherine BOTTERBUSCH, Bluffs; Mrs. Mary WILLEM, Diller, Neb.; Mrs. Emma KALTHOFF, Alma, Mo.; Mrs. Sophia ROLFS, Diller, Neb.; Mrs. Tillie LEATHERS, Ponca City, Okla.
Mrs. THOLEN was a life-long member of the Lutheran church having been baptized in infancy and confirmed at an early age.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran church Monday October 1, at one p.m. in charge of Rev. J. H. SIEVING.
Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Edwin ECKHOFF, Mr. and Mrs. Albert NIENHISER and Evelyn NIENHISER. The hymns were “Asleep in Jesus” and “Jesus, Saviour Pilot Me”.
The quartet was accompanied by Eda ECKHOFF at the organ. The pall bearers were John HURRELBRINK, Raymond MORRIS, Roy BOTTERBUSCH, Erich NORTRUP, Lawrence KISTNER and Carl BERGHAUS. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Lawrence KISTNER, Laura SCHUMACHER, Carrie BOLHS, Ada SCHUMACHER, Mrs. Carl BERGHAUS and Marguerite DICKINS.
Interment was made in the Tholen cemetery

Obituary: Tholen Thursday, Jan. 26, 1905, at two o’clock, Henry F. Tholen passed away at his home northwest of Chapin. His death, which was not unexpected, was due to heart failure and asthma. He was born in Germany in 1840. When 10 years of age he came to Illinois with his parents. In 1863 he was married to Mary Nergenah who died in 1876. To this union were born six children, three of whom died in their infancy. John, Fred and Herman survive. He was married to Johanna Ommen in 1877. To this union were born four children, William, Edward, George and Lydia. Monday, Jan. 30, the funeral in charge of Rev. Edward Tappenbeck, was held at the German Lutheran church of which he had always been a faithful member. Interment was in the Tholen graveyard, and the bearers were Jacob Ommen, John Shumacher, Herman Werries, Henry Aufdenkamp, Martin Wholers and Henry Hemminghaus.

Obituary: DEATHS TINSLEY — Eliza Susan TINSLEY, daughter of John and Polly TAYLOR was born near Bethel, Ill., April 14, 1836. Died at her home near Willis, Kan., Nov. 28, 1921, aged 85 years, 7 months, and 14 days. She was united in marriage to John TINSLEY, March 29, 1855 in Bethel, Ill. To this union were born 3 daughters, 5 sons; Mrs. Mary E. CAMPBELL, Mrs. Alma B. ARMSTRONG, Miss Kate, John, Henry, William, David, Gilbert, all of Willis. She, with her family, moved in wagons from Illinois to Missouri in 1869 and in 1874 came on to Kansas, settling 4 miles south of Hiawatha, where some of her nearest neighbors were Indians. Later they moved down near Mission Center school house, where her husband died July 29, 1875. She was then left with her 8 children. By her industry and frugality she was enabled to purchase her little farm north of Willis, which has been her home since the spring of 1882. In September, 1889, came the first break in her children, when Mrs. Alma B. ARMSTRONG passed away. It is very remarkable that her 7 remaining children, most of her 20 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren lived close by her. She was converted, joined the Wesleyan Methodist church at Mission Center, Jan. 3, 1877, has lived an exemplary Christian life since. She was never happier than when her neighbors, friends, children visited her. She was a great reader, had a wonderful memory, was always cheerful, content. It was indeed a pleasure and a privilege to care for her in her last illness. Her funeral was held at the Wesleyan Methodist church in Willis Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 30, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Elbert TRAVIS. He used as his text, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Psalms 110:15. She was buried in Kennekuk cemetery. The day was ideal, a fitting tribute to a beautiful life. — One of her grand-daughters.

Obituary: Franklin, Feb. 14 - James TRANBARGER, son of the late Andrew and Nancy TRANBARGER, was born in Franklin May 1, 1866, and passed away at his home in Franklin at 4:15 a.m. February 14, the cause of death being a cerebral hemorrhage.
He was 67 years 9 months and 13 days of age, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Linnie TRANBARGER, one son, Bernie of Franklin; three daughters, Mrs. Joe KOEHLER of Jacksonville, Mrs. Fred VANWINKLE, Virden; Mrs. Robert BARACKMAN of Keysport, Ill.; one brother, William TRANBARGER of Franklin; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Those preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, John two sisters, Margaret MCCAUSLAND and Mrs. Emma CRISWELL.
He was united in marriage about 48 years to Linnie JOLLY.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete awaiting the arrival of the daughter, Mrs. Robt. BARACKMAN of Keysport.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the residence at 2:30, in charge of Rev. J. A. BIDDLE. Burial will be in Franklin cemetery.

Obituary: Mrs. Margaret TURNER, aged 82 years was found dead in her bed Sunday morning at the home of her son, James TURNER south of Modesto. Coroner KARNES of Carlinville was called and the verdict was that death was caused by bronchial trouble and heart failure. Mrs. TURNER is survived by six sons, Peter and George of California, Willis, Thomas, Joseph and Will near Modesto. The funeral was held Monday at 10 a.m. at the New Hope church southwest of this city, Rev. R. J. WATTS, pastor of the M. E. Church, South, officiating. Interment was in the Turner cemetery southwest of town.

Obituary: Died - At the home of his mother, Lloyd Rhea TURNER, third son of Mr. and Mrs. David TURNER. He was born Feb. 22d, 1869 in Morgan county and came to Macoupin county with his parents when seven years of age where he remained until his death. His suffering at times was intense, but he bore it patiently. Seven years ago he sought the Lord, but never announced himself satisfied until a few days before death. We have these seven years of his life before us, which was as near without a fault as man liveth. From this we believe his soul is at rest. He peaceably passed away Sunday at 3 o’clock, p.m., April 7, 1901, aged 32 years, 1 month and 15 days. He leaves a mother, two brothers, other relatives and friends to mourn his death. His funeral was preached by Rev. George ROBERTSON at Vancil Temple, after which he was laid away to rest at the Turner cemetery.

Obituary: Mary Ida HOLMES was born Dec. 30, 1870, near Waverly, Morgan county, Illinois, and died at her home in Scottville, Macoupin county, May 29, 1908, at the age of 37 years, 5 months and 29 days. She had lived in and around Waverly all her life. She leaves to mourn their loss a husband, nine children and one grandchild; her mother, Mrs. G. T. HOLMES of this city; five brothers, John, Edward and James F. HOLMES of this city, A. T. HOLMES of Altamont, Kan., and Charles HOLMES of Hart’s Prairie, and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen GROVES of this city, and Mrs. Laura CARMEAN of Roodhouse, Ill. She was married to William TURNER Feb. 23, 1891. She professed religion in 1898 and joined the M. E. church, South, at Waverly, Ill.
“A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled

And though the body slumbers here,

Rev. J. O. KIRKPATRICK of this city, conducted the burial service at the Turner cemetery where interment was made.

Obituary: Robert TABB, one of our old and well respected citizens, dropped dead at his home in the eastern part of the city Wednesday night at nine o’clock, aged 85 years. Coroner J. H. SPENCER was notified and arrived Thursday morning, when an inquest was held, the jury finding that deceased came to his death by a sudden stroke of apoplexy. He was a member of the Christian church. Interment will be made in the Turner cemetery, three miles south of this city today (Friday) at 10 o’clock.

Obituary: Phebe BUCKLES was born May 27, 1840 in Hardin County, Ky., and departed this life January 15, 1917, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward MCCREADY, near Waverly, aged 76 years, 7 months and 19 days. Death was due to a complication of diseases.
She was united in marriage to Robert H. TABB, March 9, 1876 and he preceded her in death August 7, 1909. To this union were born three children, two daughters and one son: Mrs. Laura MCCREADY of Waverly, Mrs. Emma ALLEN of Franklin and Elza TABB, whose whereabouts are unknown.
She, together with her husband came to Illinois in 1905 and resided with her youngest daughter Mrs. Allen two years and the remainder of life with her other daughter, Mrs. MCCREADY.
She was converted at the age of twenty-one years and was one of the first members enrolled in Zion Methodist church where her membership still remained at the time of her death. She was always an earnest and zealous worker both in and outside the church until ill health prevented her doing so, but after she lost her hearing she was robbed of her greatest enjoyment, that of hearing the Gospel preached, and altho she endured much suffering before the end came she always trusted that eternal rest with God and her departed loved ones awaited her on the other shore, and stated before she died, of her willingness to go when the Lord saw fit to call her home.
She leaves to mourn her departure, three children, fourteen grandchildren and one great great grandchild, Burt MARTIN, little son of Mrs. Phebe MARTIN, oldest grandchild and namesake of the deceased.
Funeral services were held at the residence, four and one half miles southwest of Waverly, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. W. T. MATIS, pastor of the Waverly M. E. church, South, officiating. A chorus composed of Mesdames Elmer MANSFIELD, and Ollie COX, Miss Iris COX, and J. E. TURNER, Ollie COX and H. DALBY sang “How Firm A Foundation, “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Jesus Lover of My Soul.” Interment was made in Turner cemetery.

Obituary: John L. TRANBARGER, a well known resident of Franklin died at his home in that city at 9:15 o’clock Monday morning. Death resulted from a complication of diseases.
Deceased was the son of A.J. and Nancy TRANBARGER and was born in Tennessee 68 years ago. He came to this state many years ago and has resided in the vicinity of Franklin where he followed the occupation of farming. Twelve years ago he retired from active work and has since made his home in Franklin.
Mr. TRANBARGER was twice married, his first wife died many years ago. They were the parents of the following children, Scott TRANBARGER and Andrew TRANBARGER of Franklin; Oscar and Charles TRANBARGER, of Marshaltown, Iowa. Twelve years ago he was again married and his widow also survives. He also leaves two brothers and one sister.
He was a member of the Methodist church and of Wadley Lodge, A. F. and A. M., and of the Woodmen. He was a man noted for his integrity and upright dealing and was highly regarded in his home community.
No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral.

Obituary: Nancy Ellen HALL was born March 26, 1840, near Loami, Ill., and died at her home west of town June 30, 1904, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 14 days.
She was married March 7, 1861, to Asa TURNEY, and to this union was born one child, Leona TURPIN. She professed faith in Christ about 1866, and joined the Baptist church at the old Brick, living a devoted Christian, saying near the close of life she was prepared to go. She leaves to mourn her death a husband, one daughter, a brother and sister, three grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at Appalonia and were in charge of Elder George HART of Franklin. Interment in Rogers cemetery.

Obituary: Died at his home in Waverly, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1909, at 11:30, Asa TURNEY, age 74 years, 1 month, and 4 days.
Mr. TURNEY was born near Waverly, January 13, 18935, and grew to manhood on a farm, where he spent the greater portion of his life. On March 7, 1861, he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy HALL of Loami, Ill., who departed this life June 30, 1904. To this union one child was born, Mrs. Louis TURPIN, now living in Waverly, and with her Mr. TURNEY has made his home since the death of his wife. Mr. TURNEY had been in poor health for the past four yearsbut had been confined to his bed only about two weeks, being a great sufferer, he bore it patiently and knew the end was near, and even partly outlined the funeral arrangements.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Louis TURPIN, one brother, William of Decatur, three sisters, Mrs. Hortense HALL of Carlinville, Mrs. Harriett DUNN of Monrovia, Cal., Mrs. America SAMPLES of Sedan, Kan., besides a large number of friends. Funeral services were held from the M.E. church, south, Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. R. J. WATTS. Interment in the Rogers cemetery one mile west of Waverly.

Obituary: On Sunday morning, October 28th at about 3 o’clock, Mr. Asa TALKINGTON, aged 29 years, died at the residence of his father, Joseph TALKINGTON, Esq., on East State street. Mr. Talkington’s illness was of short duration, having been confined to his bed only about ten days. His first symptoms were cholera _nerbus and intermittent fever, which finally developed into typhoid fever. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, and the body taken from thence to the Rogers’ cemetery, west of town, for interment.

Obituary: Mrs. Jane TUCKER died at her home in this city Monday, May 17, at 5:50 p.m., after an extended illness. She was born in Morgan County, February 8, 1860. She was united in marriage to George TUCKER, who died in 1912.
Deceased is survived by two sons, William, at home, and Dean of Jacksonville; also seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Emma LYONS of this city; four brothers, Thomas and James CULBERSON of Waverly, and George and Henry of Missouri.
Funeral services were held at the residence Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, in charge of Rev. H. A. BELTON, pastor of the Baptist church. Music was furnished by Mrs. W. A. BARROW and Mrs. J. H. SHUTT. The pall bearers were Andrew TURNER, John HOLMES, Oze BOTTOMS, J. J. WOODS, Jr., Perry JACKSON, and Joe BULLARD. Interment was in Rogers Cemetery.
