The Illinoian Jacksonville, IL
April 2, 1842
letters from Texas
the fire in New Orleans
Mr Lucas:-Having seen my name announced in your last paper, as a
candidate
for a seat in the next Legislature, I beg for leave, through the same
medium,
to return my acknowledgements to those of my friends who have tendered
me the nomination, for the high estimation they have placed upon my
abilities.
But my private business, together with a consciousness that there are
others
in the Whig party in Morgan County, more competent to serve them than
myself,
compels me to withdraw from the canvass at present.
Yours, &c.

A Child Rescued From Drowning Great Presence of Mind- We have the
following
particulars of an almost miraculous rescue from a drowning of a small
child
by a young lady, in the south part of this county; on Monday afternoon
last.
A young lady, Miss Kingsley, took occasion to pay a visit to a widow
lady,
Mrs Orr, on the afternoon spoken of. In the course of the visit, a
small
child of Mrs. Orr's fell into a well of considerable depth, containing
some sixteen feet of water. The accident was immediately discovered,
and
both the mother and Miss K rushed to the assistance of the little
sufferer.
The child had already sunk and immediately appeared on the surface of
the
water. The first impulse of the mother was to plunge headlong into the
well, heedless of circumstances, and attempt the deliverance of her
child
at a cost of her own life; and was with difficulty restrained from
doing
so by Miss K; who, grasping the arm of the frantic mother, held her
firmly,
and with the other hand seized a rake near at hand, broke the head of
the
rake in a manner to enable her to make use of it in rescuing the child.
It was the work of an instant, almost; and with one hand still holding
the mother, before the child sank! the second time succeeding in
grappling
its clothing and raising it within a short distance of the top of the
well,
when the hold loosened and the child was again precipitated into the
water.
Never despairing, and still endeavoring to soothe the anguish of the
mother,
the young lady again succeeded in entangling the head of the rake in
the
childs clothing; and in this way bouyed it up, preventing strangulation
until assistance could be obtained, and finally the little sufferer was
taken out alive.
A case of such coolness, composure, and power of execution, under such
exciting circumstances, as was exhibited by Miss Kingsley, is seldom
recorded;
and she can have the pleasing reflection, by her presence of mind, of
not
only saving the child from an untimely end, but rescuing the mother
from
a fate equally horrible. -

Prospectus of The Constitutionist
No Apology is required for offering a new paper to the support of the
people
of Morgan. It has been a matter of surprise for months that so
intelligent
and populous a county could furnish but a single newspaper. But now
that
the Whig portion of its citizens is without an organ for the advocacy
of
their principles, it is not to be supposed that the newspaper field
will
remain unoccupied. Without refering to the motives which have prompted
him to again assume the chair-editorial, the undersigned therefore
proposes
to issue a handsome paper with the above title; assumed in reference to
the recent attempts to elevate individual judgement of a "higher law"
above the Constitution.
as to the character of the paper, it is sufficient to say that it will
advocate WHIG MEASURES AND WHIG MEN- the undersigned believing that his
course as late editor of the Morgan Journal makes any further
exposition
of sentiment unnecessary...... E.R.ROE

Presentation of Swords...Governor FRENCH...to officers in the Mexican
War.
We saw that of Col. WARREN of Jacksonville, and a most splendid affair
it is.
The blade is a straight, "dress sword," manufactured in Europe,
but mounted and ornamented in this country. The hilt is massive silver,
heavily overlaid with gold by the electro-typing process; and the
entire
handle and guard are of the most exquisite workmanship. On
one side of the blade is a diagram of the route of Gen. Taylor's
Division
in Mexico; and on the reverse, the inscription: "Presented by
the state of Illinois to Major William B Warren, for services in the
late
war of the United States with Mexico; and especially for his
gallantry at the battle of Buena Vista, Feb. 22, 1847." The scabbord
is also heavily gilt; and as a specimen of American skill, does
great credit to yankee taste and workmanship.

arrived in this city yesterday afternoon en route for the elysium of

young couples hereabouts, whose inexorable papas will not consent, to
their
union - the sandbar - and having procured the services of a parson, and
being transported across the rubicon by a jolly boatman, the "tie
that binds two willing hearts" was speedily adjusted and they returned
to the city, happy and contented, and received the congratulations of a
number of spectators who had assembled on the levee to witness their
arrival.--Alton
