Of
"The Old Settlers' Association"
In The Morgan County Area
Much valuable ancestral data is contained in a large book containing the minutes, necrological lists and membership data 1869-1899. A photocopy has been made of the many pages, and is being put on a computer listing for future use by Florence Hutchison and Warren Haley. To introduce the membership list, the following information is taken from the History of Morgan County, 1878 by Donnelley, Loyd & Company, pages 319,320.
"The following history of the Association, with its list of members, was prepared by the Secretary, Mr. Timothy Chamberlain. The society is one of the best organized in the Western States. Mr. Chamberlain has taken great pains in keeping the records of its meetings, and the list of its members, in an exceedingly neat and systematic manner in a book prepared by him expressly for this purpose:
"At a Fourth of July celebration at Arcadia in 1869, there were found to be a large number of the early settlers of the county, and the conversation naturally turning to things and events of the past, and a desire having been expressed by many of the aged persons present to meet their friends of early days, it was decided among them that a call should be issued in the papers, and all invited to be present at a picnic."
The following notice appeared in the Jacksonville Journal of September 2, 1869:
"OLD SETTLERS' MEETING -- A meeting of the old settlers of Morgan County will be held at Arcadia, Thursday, September 9th, in D. G. Henderson's grove, at which time Judge William Thomas, J. T. Jones and M. P. Ayres, will speak.
Other speakers are expected, and without doubt the picnic, for such it is to be, will be an occasion of great interest. It is desired that all those residing in the territory, which in 1830 was embraced in Morgan County, should be present and participate in the exercises. Old settlers are particularly invited."
The first regular meeting of the old settlers of Morgan, Cass and Scott, was held in the grove near Arcadia, on Thursday, September 9th, 1869. Pioneers from all parts of these counties were on hand at an early hour. The exercises were opened with prayer by Rev. Joel Goodrick. Hon. Joseph Morton, Capt. Yaples, Judge Whitlake, Bradley Thompson, M. P. Ayres, and others, made remarks appropriate to the occasion. A letter was read from Judge William Thomas, apologizing for and explaining his absence. Mr. Charles Cox was First Marshal of the day, and Mr. John M. Wilson assistant. Dr. John Craig was Secretary.
Not less than 500 persons were present. An ode was sung, composed by Major George M. McConnel, of Jacksonville. The following resolution, offered by Mr. M. P.Ayres, was unanimously adopted:
"Resolved, That we cherish tenderly the recollection of the names of our honored dead, the early pioneers of our county, and we realize that though dead, yet through their works they still speak, and we trust we may imitate their virtues, and show by our works our appreciation of the toils and trials endured in our behalf."
It was intended that a regular association should be organized at this time, so that hereafter annual meetings might be held, and every valuable act concerning the history of the counties be preserved. However, the time was so fully occupied with other matters, that such an organization could not be effected, and a meeting was called for August 25, 1870, which met again in Henderson's grove, hear Arcadia, and after listening to speeches from Hon. Newton Cloud, Rev. N. P. Heath, Major G. M. McConnel, Senator Richard Yates, and others a society was organized, and a constitution was presented and adopted. All could then become members who were in this region, previous to the deep snow of 1830 and 1831.

The above publication contained a complete account of the history of
the Old Settlers' Association, as well as a complete list of members
prepared
by the Secretary, Mr. Timothy Chamberlain. Although the group of old
settlers
who organized the association intended to accomplish said organization
at a meeting held on September 2, 1869, it wasn't until the next
meeting
called for August 25, 1870, that a constitution was presented and read
by Judge Wm. Thomas. After the constitution was slightly amended, it
was
adopted. According to the original provisions, "all can become members
who were in this region previous to the deep snow of 1830 and 1831".
The organization consisted of old settlers residing in the counties of
Morgan, Cass and Scott, composed of the territory originally included
in
the County of Morgan.
The entire constitution is presented in this account as were the list
of
officers at that time. The officers listed were as follows: President,
Wm. Thomas; Vice-Presidents, Elliott Stevenson, William Lindsey, and
Jesse
Henry; Secretary, Timothy Chamberlain; Treasurer, John Robertson;
Chaplain,
Rev. William Gallaher; Marshal, Charles Sample; Finance Committee,
Bazzill
Davenport, John A. Wright, John Tureman; Executive Committee, Huram
Reeve,
John Bergen, Joseph Morton, Keeling Berry and Samuel Brockman.
The account went on to say that there would be no charge made for
membership,
and that "all who have been in the limits of old Morgan previous to
1840, have frequently been invited to sign the constitution, or send
their
names to the secretary. Yet there are a great many persons who have
neglected
to attend to this matter, and their names therefore do not appear in
the
following list of members:"

The
Old
Settlers
The following are the official minutes of the annual business meeting
of
the
old settlers association of Morgan and Cass counties, held at the court
house in Jacksonville Saturday, June 30th:The president, Mr. M. P.
Ayers,
occupied the chair. The roll of officers was called by the secretary,
Timothy Chamber-lain. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.
Deferred business, appointing committee to collect information in
regard
to early settlement of county. Motion of A. Foreman that a committee of
one from each ward in Jacksonville, and one for each precinct in Morgan
and Cass counties be appointed.
Anderson Foreman was appointed chair-man of committee for city, with
power to appoint committees in the wards. The other members were
chosen as follows: Arcadia, John M. Wilson; Bethel, Henry
Parks; Concord, Daniel Detrick; Meredosia, Edward Lusk;
Sulphur Springs, Whitfield Conlee; Murrayville, Wm. McDonald; Woodson,
Wm. Mick; Mauvaisterre, E. S. Hinrichsen; Franklin, W. J. Wyatt;
Waverly,
W. J. Deatherage; Yatesville, W. J. Latham; Lynnville, Jas. Huckstep.
Cass county: Virginia, Keelen Berry; Arenzville, Ira Houston; Little
Indian,
Wm. Stevenson; Philadelphia, Hiram Baxter; Beardstown, Henry Shaw;
Chandlerville, C. E. Lippencott; Ashland, W. A. Mitchell; Oregon, John
Wyatt;
Richmond, R. D. Morgan; Hickory, Robert Taylor; Monroe, J. H. Tureman.
On motion of Samuel Woods, seconded by John Robertson, in view of the
fact that the members of this society are being rapidly lessened by
death,
resolved, that all persons who were living within
the boundaries of this association previous to January 1, 1851, are
entitled to membership by having their names enrolled. On motion,
Thursday, August 9,1883, this society will hold its fifteenth annual
reunion.
A committee of five was appointed by the chair to locate the place of
holding the reunion, and to report to the executive committee on
Saturday, July 14th, at 1:30 p.m.: H Tureman and Keelen Berry,
of Cass county, and John Robertson,
Samuel Woods and William Richardson of Morgan county.
The executive and finance committees were re-elected. President, vice-
presidents, secretary, treasurer and marshalls were re-nominated, and
Joseph Roach, of Cass county, nominated for Chaplain. The
meeting then adjourned.
---------------------------
The Old Settlers' Meeting.
The location of the old settlers' picnic has not yet been decided upon,
and
the people of Jacksonville should make every effort to have it at the
Fair
Ground here. Jacksonville is the most central point that is fit for an
occasion like this, and is the only place in either Morgan or Cass
counties that can be reached by railroad from every locality.
The occasion promises to be
a grand one. If it is located at a point that the people can reach
there will be an immense crowd in attendance. The people are
tired of getting off at a way station and wading through rain and
dust for the purpose of seeing their old friends.
Let the FairGround here be selected. It has all the advantages
possessed
by other places, and many others besides. Shade, water and grass are in
abundance. It is easy of access from every part of both counties, and
the
amphitheater can be well utilized in case of rain, and it will serve as
a
resting place for those who are tired. In fact we cannot think of an
objection that can be made to the place. Of course it will be to the
advantage of the people of the city to have the meeting take place
here.
Let every one constitute himself a committee of one to procure the
location
as we suggest.

Old Settlers Day
_____
Twenty-Third Annual Reunion
at the Fair Grounds
To-day.
_____
A Large Crowd in Attendance,
and an Enjoyable
Gathering.
_____
The old settlers reunion of Morgan and Cass counties long since came to
be one of the
most successful gatherings held in this part of the state. Old and
young
gather from all parts
to make the day one long to be remembered. This day has not been an
exception
to the rule.
The day is an ideal one as far as weather and roads can go to make it
such.
The rain of
yesterday settled the dust and the heat of the day is only such as to
make
it enjoyable and
not uncomfortable. During the early morning the road were lined with
vehicles
on their way
to the grounds, trains came in loaded down, street cars were filled and
the heavy laden
dinner baskets betokened the destination of the travelers.
The Juvenile Band, of this city, is furnishing the music. They paraded
around the square
this morning at 9:30 discoursing music sweet as only they can. They
then
proceeded to the
fair grounds and began the exercises with a selection.
The chairman of the day is Marshall P. Ayers, and everybody knows that
he is a veteran
and a most successful chairman, as well as one of the leading old
settlers'
in the county.
He is doing his duty nobly today.
Coronation was the first song, Dr. M. H. Goodrick, acting as chorister.
Everybody was
invited to sing and almost everybody did. Scripture reading and prayer
came next,
Rev. C.B. Barton leading. He read the forty-seventh Psalm and made
appropriate
remarks bearing on the thought of the Scripture which was that of
praise
to God for mercies
received.
Next Came the song, Rock of Ages, everybody singing, and after it the
sec-retary's
report,
read by the secretary, Timothy Chamberlain. It included the
recommendation
for the
election of officers for the ensuing year as follows:
President, M. P. Ayers
Vice Presidents, Wm. Stevenson, W. P. Hart, J. H. Tureman, Hirem Reeve
and T. M. Angelo.
Secretary, Timothy Chamberlain.
Treasurer, John Robertson.
Marshal, W. C. Self
Chaplain, W. F. Short
The minutes were adopted in full as read, not withstanding a vigorous
protest
by Mr. Ayers
against his re-election as president.
The reading of the necrological record came next, and included a great
many names of
old settlers who have passed away during the past year.
A song, The Shining Shore, was then announced, and it was sung with a
will.
Rev. J.C. Sargent and a chorus of old settlers joined in the singing of
an old hymn which
was very much appreciated.
Roland M. Diller was introduced as an old settler from Sangamon county.
He spoke of
many of his experiences in the early days, giving a most interesting
talk
and many
reminiscences of cabin experience and primitive life. He referred
particularly
to his own
personal life, to the free-heartedness
of early settlers and to the enjoyment of life at that time. He told of
his first experience at
deer hunting in Sangamon county, and described the Buck ague, as he
experienced
it.
He paid a glowing tribute to the women of that day. Though they were
not
as well dressed
as those of to-day, they were just as pretty and deserve a great deal
of
credit for their part
of the early work done. The men who are close
in financial matters with their wives received a vigorous scoring at
his
hands.
The morning exercises were brought to a close by another selection by
the
band and the
audiencedispersed to various parts of the ground for dinner.
Notes
The number of visitors from outside the county is very great. Cass
county
visitors are
particularly noticeable by their presence.
The crowd assembled on the fair ground is probably the largest ever
ass-embled
on a
like occasion. This afternoon's program is of a very interesting
character
and will be given
in detail in to-morrow's COURIER.
The fair grounds are in good shape for a large gathering like that of
to-day,
although the
improvements are not com-pleted and a large force of men are at work.
The
east and
southeast parts accommodate the crowd to-day.
A large number of the old settlers were photographed in a body just
after
the morning
exercises closed. They were seated on the north side of the tent.
The large tent which has been used for several years past is again
doing
duty. It is
located in the eastern part of the grounds and was filled to
overflowing
this morning.

THE OLD SETTLERS
- 1895
______ PROCEEDINGS OF THE TWENTY- SEVENTH ANNUAL REUNION _____ Of the
Old
Settlers' Association of Morgan and Cass Counties – Thous- ands of
Citizens
Present – Addresses by Prominent Citizens — Officers Elected –
Necrological
Record. "We are passing away," was the legend printed on the
song programs of the twenty-seventh annual reunion of the Old Settlers'
Association of Morgan and Cass counties, held in the fair grounds
to-day,
and one has only to glance at the necrological record for the past year
to be brought to the full realization of the fact that grim death has
made
decisive inroads into the ranks of our old citizens, for the deaths
number
somewhere between 160 and 170, and there were a few not reported at
all,
for the physicians of Cass county are lax in the matter of returning
their
death certificates to the county clerk. The oldest settler in Morgan
county
whose death was recorded the past year was Mrs.
Sarah
Doty, aged 97, and the oldest of Cass was Bridget
Fitzsimmons,
aged
100.
THE REUNION
The reunion of the old settlers and the young settlers, too, brought an
immense crowd of visitors to the city today. The attendance this
morning
was estimated at between two and three thousand, and it was expected
that
the number would be swelled to five thousand this afternoon. The
committees
of arrangements did their work well, and the beautiful weather
considered
it is not surprising that there has been an immense outpouring of
people.
The marshall and his assistants are the same as will be found in the
list
of officers published with this report, and F.M. Ferguson was the chief
of the police depart-ment of the grounds. Country visitors began
arriving
in the city very early this morning, and after stopping a short time
down
town proceeded to the grounds. City people went out in buggies and the
street cars, the railroads brought in large numbers and by 10 o'clock
the
fair grounds presented a lively appearance. Plenty of pure ice water
was
provided free for drinking purposes and in one of the exhibition halls
a watchman was provided to look after the lunch baskets. The exercises
of the day took pace under the large pavilion used for machinery during
the fair. Seats were provided for about two thousand people. The
speaker's
stand was erected at the east side of the building. It was handsomely
decorated
with the national colors and flowers and conspicuous on the background
was a large painting of J. W. Goltra, one of the early presidents of
the
association. The decorating of the stand was the work of a committee
from
the Woman's Relief Corps, G.A.R.
THE FORENOON PROGRAM
It was about 10:30 when President Conover called the assemblage to
order
and announced music by the Juvenile band. At that time every foot of
space
under the great pavilion was occupied, while on the platform were some
15 or 20 of the oldest members of the association, most of them ladies.
The band played Sousa's "March - The Directorate," and then all
united in singing the grand old hymn "Coronation," Prof. Zeller
leading and the band accompanying. Prayer was offered by Rev. Julian
Sturtevant,
of Aurora, Ill., who was born in Morgan county 61 years ago. After
prayer
the hymn, "Shining Shore," was sung, and then the venerable secretary,
Timothy Chamberlain, read the minutes of the last business meeting, and
the same were adopted.
The following officers having been selected by a committee, they were
unanimously
elected:
President - Geo. Conover.
Vice presidents - J. E. Wright, M. J. Clerihan, John Robertson, Wm.
Epler,
R. R. Stevenson, M. P. Ayers and J.H . Tureman..
Secretary - Timothy Chamberlain.
Treasurer - Frank Robertson.
Marshals - T.M. Angelo, chief; R. R. Stevenson, W.H. Jordan,
assistants.
Chaplain - G.R.S. McElfresh.
After the singing of "America" Secretary Chamberlain read the
necrological record, and then the president introduced Rev. Julian M.
Sturtevant,
who in a brief address paid a glowing tribute to the old settlers who
have
passed to the other world. The speaker said he had not resided in
Morgan
county for many years but among the list of the departed he recognized
many familiar names. He thought we had learned to appreciate the work
and
worth of those early pioneers. He took issue with the noted Frenchman
who
asserted that Americans did not love their homes, for, said he, we have
in this county the most touching illustrations of the love and even
veneration
of the home. In the history of America we see the home transplanted
pure
and untarnished across the continent. Those early homes were the homes
of simplicity and love, the homes of privation and honest toil, and the
good and the beautiful which we enjoy in our homes of today are due to
the toil and self-sacrifice of those old people whose memories we love
to honor today. Then let us honor them by holding fast what they
regarded
as sacred all over this broad land. At the conclusion of this address
M.
J. Clerihan offered a resolution of thanks to the ladies of the W.R.C.,
who had so beautifully decorated the speaker's stand. The resolution
was
adopted by a rising vote. After the singing of the hymn "Sweet Bye
and Bye" Dr. P.G. Gillett was introduced. He regarded he reunion as
a touching occasion to all who had learned to venerate the aged
pioneers
of Illinois. He thought the early history of Illinois most intensely
interesting
and deprecated the fact that our youth devote so much time to reading
the
history of the Pilgrim and Huguenot fathers and so little to the
history
of the early Illinois territory. The history of Illinois began before
that
of some of the states east of her, and her early period was replete
with
romance and even tragedy. Illinois men had shown in battles with the
Indian
and later in their battles for the Union that they were brave men, and
it was possible that to Illinois men was largely due the ultimate
success
of the struggle for our nations's flag. M. P. Ayers was next introduced
but he said he would not make a long speech because he thought he might
have a chance on the afternoon program. He said he had been in
Jacksonville
65 years and if there were any old people in the audience who had known
his father or who had known him (the speaker) when he was a boy he
would
like to take him by the hand. There-upon one old lady remarked in an
undertone
that she knew the speaker when he was a little boy and raided
watermelon
patches. Mr. Ayers protested. He said if there was any one present who
knew of any of his bad pranks when a boy he didn't want them to tell.
He
never hooked a watermelon in his life but he went with some boys once
who
did. After singing the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee," an adjournment
was made till 1:30. Dinner was the next thing in order and soon
hundreds
of old and young settlers formed in groups about the grounds enjoying
the
good things from well filled baskets.
