Located on Harts Prairie on the southern edge of
Morgan
County,
the legal description of this burial ground is in Section 34 of
Township
13 N Range 9 W. The cemetery is slightly more than one-half mile north
of the Morgan and Macoupin county line, and is nearly a half-mile south
of the Harts Prairie Missionary Baptist Church. The new church building
was formally dedicated on Sunday, Jan. 9, 1881, with Elder W.P. (Billy)
Hart preaching the dedicatory sermon to an overflow crowd. When
approaching
the church from the west on the Nortonville-Waverly road (also known as
State Aid Road 18 and Road 100N) it is possible to see the taller
tombstones
in the cemetery unless the crops are too high. When walking to the
cemetery
either from the church, or east from the road known both as State Aid
Road
9 and as Road 2676E, it is necessary to crawl under a single strand of
electrified fence wire. A visit to the cemetery on April 28, 1970 found
the cemetery to be badly overgrown and unkept. But a visit on Dec. 28,
1976 found the cemetery to be well-mowed and cleared of all brush. The
fence was in excellent condition. A large portion of the tombstones are
toppled and broken, and some graves are badly sunken. A small
maintenance
fund for the cemetery is administered by Wemple State Bank of Waverly.
A large portion of the readings listed here for Hartland Cemetery
tombstones
were made by Mrs. Roberta Fanning Hutton of Jacksonville. Persons
interested
in families interred in Hartland Cemetery should investigate the
burials
made in Bull Cemetery, which is about one-half mile northeast of
Hartland
Cemetery.

Fanning, Edgar | 21yrs 6m 10d | 10 Mar 1889 | Son of R.D. & E.E. Fanning *(Fanning, Charles Edgar) *From Donna L. Banbury: "Actually, this is Charles Edgar Fanning B 9-30-1867 died 3-10-1889. He was 21yrs 6 mths 10 days old when he died. The picture of his headstone is hard to read, however other Illinois records indicate this is a fact. This has caused a great deal of confusion on genealogy websites. It took me several months to come to the conclusion that the stone was misread or there was a clerical error. According to my grandmother, Myrtle Fanning Kelley, his sister, he was killed as a young man when kicked in the head by a horse." |
