Cemetery transcription by members of the Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society

This well-kept cemetery is at the northeast edge of the tiny settlement of Sinclair about six miles northeast of Jacksonville. The cemetery was adjacent to Hebron Methodist Church before that building was torn down and burned on July 19, 1976. The building had been constructed in 1916.
The Jacksonville Daily Journal of Friday, Aug. 5, 1966 noted in the 50 Years Ago column that "The new Methodist church at Hebron will cost an estimated $7,000. It will have a seating capacity of 350 and an electric light plant will be installed in the building." The earliest church building at Sinclair, constructed of logs, had been erected about 1835 or 1840. It was replaced by another structure in 1857 which served until 1916. In the very early days of white men's settlement, the cemetery's site was known as Robinson's Campground and the area surrounding was known as Dodsworth Settlement. On Nov. 9, 1857, Samuel Sinclair laid out the village of Sinclair. An old cemetery was located on the nearby Elisha Fox farm, but most of those burials were moved to the Hebron Cemetery before 1840. The legal description of the site of Hebron Cemetery is in the northeast corner of the southwest quarter of Section 28 in Township 16 N Range 9 W. The burials listed here have been gathered from several sources over a period of about nine years, but the bulk of the tombstone readings were made by Mr. and Mrs. Guy Martin of Waverly and are used here with their permission. They were assisted by Mr. Reuben Bates.

HART, Matthew Died 22 Dec 1881 Age 70 Yr 4 Mo
(From Jacksonville Daily Journal of Dec. 23, 1881. DEATH OF MATTHEW HART.
At 10 o'clock yesterday morning Matthew Hart died at his home on Prairie Street.
Aside from general debility no cause of death has been assigned as far as we have
been able to ascertain. He was about 70 years old. His birthplace was in Yorkshire,
England. For 30 years he had resided in this county, most of the time on farms not far
from this city. He leaves a wife to mourn his loss, but no children. One brother survives
him. His home is in Kansas, his name, David Hart. Mr. Hart has long been a member
of the Methodist church. The most of his life he has spent in farming and was well known
far and wide as one of the most thrifty, industrious and successful of agriculturists. His
friendships were numerous, cordial and enduring. The funeral will probably take place
at Hebron church some time tomorrow.)

Hodgson, who for some weeks has been suffering from an attack of pneumonia and insanity,
is now convalescing. Through those long weary nights friends stood mutely beside his head,
watching, hoping, praying that with the morning light his reason might return. At last those
prayers were answered. From a sweet and restful sleep he awoke, and then declared how
for two long months it seemed he wandered without friends or home amid jungles wild and
through snow and rain, and desired his attendant, who was standing near, to carry to his
parents and brothers the glad tidings of recovery. It was an affecting scene, as each
approached, to find that he knew them all and was himself again.")
