Cemetery transcription by members of the Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society

This incorporated cemetery is one of the finest cemeteries in Morgan County, enjoying a beautiful location and an active maintenance program financed by an endowment fund. Sheppard Cemetery is east of Illinois Route 67 between Jacksonville and Woodson. It is reached by driving east on the first road south of Memorial Lawn Cemetery. After crossing the railroad tracks the cemetery is entered by using the first lane to the south. Sheppard Cemetery is about one fourth mile directly south of the Lake Jacksonville spillway, and it is in the northwest quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 16 in Township 14 N Range 10 W. Some of the families buried here are closely associated with the families buried in Sheppard Cemetery north of Athensville and in Whitlock Cemetery near Nortonville.

(This unusual tombstone is among the best known in Morgan County. Carved or molded in the

shape of a tree trunk with a broken off branch, it is lettered "Broken down but not destroyed."

The trunk is encircled with a rope. George H. Coons, born in Sangamon County, Illinois,

took his own life by hanging with a rope, while grieving over the death of his young wife.

His place of death was Joseph Johnson Sheppard's scales pen. A tale concerning this

tombstone was current in the summer of 1971. This "haunted" tombstone was allegedly glowing

in the night and families were driving along the nearby road to witness the sight.)
