Two field stones are the only indications that
this
site is a burial ground. Clyde Oxley cultivates the surrounding field
but
does not disturb the area around the two field stones. The site is in
the
west half of the southeast quarter of Section 17 of Township 13 N Range
9 W of the Third Principal Meridian, in Morgan County. It is east of
and
across the road from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Oxley, about one
mile
east and nearly a half mile north of Nortonville. Although it isn't
known
for certain who is buried here the Oxleys believe them to be members of
the Spires family. Morgan County land records tend to verify this
belief.
Even before 1853 the land was owned by the Spires family. On Feb. 12,
1853,
Will B. Spires and John C. Spires sold to William S. Spires the land
where
the graves are situated but no mention of a burial ground is made on
the
land entry recorded at the Morgan County clerk's office in Deed Record
FF on pages 206 and 207. A further search of land deeds through March
24,
1883 shows the land remained in the Spires family but there seems to be
no written mention in the deeds of a burial ground.
