Obituary: Joel C. LANKTON was born in the state of New York Oct. 11, 1831, and was the son of Joel and Sarah LANKTON. When quite young he came to Illinois with his parents, locating at Naples, and later the family moved to this city where the deceased has resided ever since. In 1857 he was united in marriage to Miss Adelia SHUMWAY, of Macoupin county. Two children were born to this union, both of whom died in youth, and were shortly joined by their mother. August 23, 1865, he was again married, this time to Miss Susan MOFFET. To this union four children were born - Alice, Nellie (now Mrs. C. O. SHUMWAY, of Madison, Ill.), J. H. and Bertha. These, with their mother, survive the husband and father. At an early age he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, and to the end remained an active and consistent member. He was one of the oldest members of Waverly Lodge No. 93, I. O. O. F., holding a membership covering a period of forty five years; was also a charter member of Waverly Encampment No. 86, and of Waverly Rebakah lodge No. 104.
In 1864 he embarked in the grocery business in this city with Mr. Elisha MINER, and three years later Robert MCKEE was admitted to partnership, the firm then being known as MINER, LANKTON & Co. Two years later Mr. MINER retired and J. C. SALTER became a member under the firm name of SALTER, LANKTON & Co. The same year Mr. LANKTON sold his interest to SALTER & MCKEE and retired for a short time. In 1870 Mr. LANKTON and his brother-in-law, Mr. H. C. COOPER, became proprietors of the business and continued it for ten years under the firm name of LANKTON & COOPER. His next partner was Mr. Wm. BATES and they conducted a successful business until 1890, when the firm name was changed to LANKTON & HUMER, the latter gentleman remaining one year, when Mr. LANKTON purchased his interest and became sole proprietor.
Mr. LANKTON was a men of the strictest business integrity, quiet and unobtrusive in his manner, and disliked ostentation or display. For many years he was a president of the village board and always showed a marked interest in the business and moral advancement of the town. In his death the city has lost a valued and honorable citizen, and his family a wise counselor and loyal friend.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, being conducted by the Rev. Arthur WILLARD. At the grave, in the East cemetery, the burial ritual of the orders to which he belonged was read, and the final tribute paid to their deceased brother.

Obituary: Thomas LARGE died last Saturday morning at his home in Lowder.
Decedent was born May 2, 1874, near Jacksonville. He is survived by his wife, Lennie; two daughters, Mrs. Daisy SCHAFFER of Springfield, and Mrs. Elizabeth MAYES of Lowder; two sons, Clyde of Lowder and Clarence of Springfield; three brothers, Adam of California, Robert of Jacksonville, Samuel of Springfield; and one sister, Mrs. Hannah SMITH, of Jacksonville.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at 11 o’clock in the Lowder Baptist church. Interment was in the Turner cemetery, near Waverly.

Obituary: Mary Jane Jones was born Oct. 11, 1835, and departed this life April 30, 1908, at 2:30 o’clock, at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 19 days. She was the third child of James and Harriet Jones. She was married to Thomas Leak March 19, 1857. She was converted at a grove meeting about the year 1870, near Mud Prairie Church, when she united with the M. E. Church, South, at that place, where she remained a member until twelve years ago when she moved to Waverly and removed her membership to this place.
She leaves to mourn her loss her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Amanda Ralston of Franklin, and Mrs. Josie Cleary of this city; two sons, George of Medora and James of Waverly - three children having died in infancy. She also leaves two brothers and five sisters; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday morning at 10 o’clock at the M. E. Church South, conducted by Rev. A. E. Thomas, followed by interment in Rogers cemetery.

Obituary: Thomas LEAK, the youngest child of a family of six children, was born in England on September 15, 1835 and passed away peacefully at his home in this city Friday, March 5, 1915 at 4:30 o’clock, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 18 days.
He came to this country with his parents when a boy of sixteen years of age. They settled on a farm five miles west of Waverly. He spent the larger portion of his life in that neighborhood. Nineteen years ago he moved to Waverly and since that time has made this city his home. For a number of years he filled the office of police magistrate.
On the 19th day of March 1857 he was united in marriage with Mary Jane JONES, and for a half of a century they walked through life together sharing the victories and the defeats. This union was broken seven years ago when she preceded him in death. To this union were born 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters. One son and two daughters died in infancy.
He leaves to mourn their loss, 2 sons and 1 daughter, namely: George LEAK of Medora, James LEAK and Mrs. Josephine CLEARY of Waverly; also one sister, Mrs. Fanny KIRBY of Franklin, and 9 grandchildren; also numerous relatives and friends.
Mr. LEAK was converted in the year 1885, in a revival held at Appalonia conducted by Rev. MAYHEW. He untied with the M. E. Church South at Mud Prairie, later moving his membership to the M. E. Church, South of this city, of which he was a member at the time of his death.
Funeral services were held in the M. E. Church, South, Sunday afternoon, March 7, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. H. M. ELLIS. Interment was made in Rogers cemetery.

Obituary: Wm. LEAK a former resident and prominent business man of Waverly died at his home in Jacksonville, Saturday, having succumbed to a lingering illness of many month’s duration.
Mr. LEAK was born August 5, 1825, in Tipthorne, England, and was the oldest son of George and Jane LEAK. He was married to Miss Martha ROBINSON in the year 1850 and they came to this country April 1, 1852, coming direct to Morgan county. Mr. LEAK bought a farm in the Durbin neighborhood in 1853 and resided on the same until 1876. He was one of the charter members of the Durbin M. E. church, serving as superintendent, class leader and in various other offices of the church. He was a very earnest worker, conscientious in all his work for the Master. While a young man Mr. LEAK became a member of the Wesleyan church in England.
The first wife of Mr. LEAK died August 22, 1869, and on Feb. 22, 1870, he was again married to Miss Josephine BURCH. Two children were born to this union, William Henry who died in infancy, and Mrs. Jeanette STEVENSON, wife of H. S. STEVENSON of Jacksonville, with whom he made his home at the time of his death.
On October of 1876 Mr. LEAK and his family moved to Waverly, where he engaged in the mercantile business for 26 years. The firm with which he was connected, was known as WOODMANSEE & LEAK until 1892, when the partnership was dissolved, Mr. WOODMANSEE disposing of his interests to Mr. DENNIS. The firm then became LEAK & DENNIS. Mr. LEAK retired from business in 1902. Deceased was an active member of the M. E. church at Waverly, holding various offices. He was a member of the school board for several terms and was always interested in all the activities of church, school and city. In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. LEAK moved to Jacksonville and became members of Grace M. E. church. The wife passed away May 3, 1911, since which Mr. LEAK has been in failing health. Those surviving are one brother, Thomas LEAK of Waverly, one sister, Mrs. Fannie KIRBY of Franklin, one daughter, Mrs. Harry S. STEVENSON, and one grandson, Day STEVENSON.
Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock in charge of Dr. J. R. HARKER. The remains were taken to Waverly Monday morning, here funeral services were conducted at 10 o’clock at the First M. E. church in charge of Dr. J. W. MILLER, pastor of Grace M. E. church. Interment was made in East cemetery.

Obituary: George LEAK died at the home of his brother, Wm. Leak, 500 North Diamond street, in Jacksonville last Friday at 4:30 p.m., after an illness of about a year. Some days ago he went out in the severe weather which no doubt hastened his death, as his feet and limbs were partly frozen.
He was well and familiarly known in this city and for a number of years a resident here, but went to Jacksonville some years ago to make his home.
He was born in Tipthorpe, Yorkshire, England, March 15, 1833, and a son of George and Jane LEAK, coming to this country with his parents in 1851. For a number of years he was employed at the Central hospital as night watch, but was obliged to give up his work a little more than a year ago on account of ill health.
Three brothers and one sister survive him: William, of Jacksonville; John, of Franklin, Mrs. John KIRBY, residing near Franklin, and Thomas of Waverly.
Brief services were held at the residence in Jacksonville, on Saturday, after which the remains were conveyed to this city and removed to the residence of his brother Thomas, where they rested until Sunday, when they were interred in East cemetery.

Obituary: Edna LONG, aged two years, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Truman LONG on Monday, Sept. 9, 1929, at Clements, Ill. She had been very ill for three weeks and although everything possible was done to relieve the little sufferer, it was of no avail, and she has gone to join her little brother, who died just three years ago. Mr. and Mrs. LONG have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.” (Father of the above two children was Oscar Truman LONG who was born near Athensville, Ill. on Jan. 28, 1884. He lived for many years at Valley City in Pike County, Ill. He died March 31, 1970 and is buried in Griggsville Cemetery. Mother of the above two children was Flossie COFFMAN LONG, born in Kentucky. In 1977 she is the wife of William MCDADE and they live in Valley City. In addition to the children buried in Davis Cemetery, Truman and Flossie became the parents of the following children, all of whom are living in 1977; Donald Dean LONG born March 13, 1931; Marylin Geane, April 13, 1934; Mary Jane, Nov. 29, 1939; Frank JOHNSTON, Oct. 15, 1942; and Betty Ann, May 14, 1945. Donald Dean married Dorothy Jean DALTON.)

Obituary: This is the obituary of George LOVING, who was born and raised in Morgan County, IL. He moved to Nebraska later in life, but left many descendants in Morgan County and surrounding areas.
George W. LOVING, one of our best known, and most beloved citizens after a short illness departed from this life last Saturday morning, May 5, 1923 at 10:45 o’clock. Mr. LOVING’S death was a severe shock felt by everyone.
Especially do the children mourn the absence of this grand old man, who always had a kind word and an affectionate smile for each one at all times. As a veteran of the Civil War, he was a staunch supporter of the American Legion and was in full sympathy with legislative measures for the benefit of World War veterans.
Funeral services were held from the Congregational church Sunday afternoon at three o’clock. The body was shipped to Virden, ILL., the following day for internment. Deceased was born on the 10th day of January, 1844.
He grew to young manhood on a farm near Waverly and when the call came to join the colors when the Civil war broke out, he was one of the first young men of the neighborhood to enlist. He was in the service from 1861 to 1865, a member of Company “G”, 101, Illinois infantry.
He was in the battles of Lookout Mountain and Shiloh, Siege of Vicksburg, Sherman’s march to the sea, and many other battles. He received his honorable discharge in 1865, with a record full of courage and bravery.
He was married to Adelia ROSSON of Waverly, Illinois, October 11, 1866. She died in November 1889. To this union were born seven children, four boys and three girls, who are all living, Parris E., of Stewart Lake, Canada, Arthur S., of Rockford, Illinois, Mrs. Samuel HAGGARD and Mrs. William ROBERTS of Virden, Illinois, Edward H. and Charles S. of Omaha, Nebr., and Mrs. Harvey STENSON of Sutton.
Mr. LOVING moved from Illinois to Sutton, Nebraska, with his seven motherless children in March 1892, and resided all these years in the home known as “LOVING’S corner” and he will be greatly missed by his many friends who as they passed daily by his home, were always sure of a warm greeting from him. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in boyhood and has ever since remained a faithful member of that church.
