This is the picture of David Elmer Swales and Mary Jane (Newland) Swales. He was born in 1842 in Abingdon, VA and died in 1925 in Jacksonville, IL at the age of 83. He was a printer for the local newspaper now known I think, as the Jacksonville Journal/Courier.
Mary Jane Newland was also born in Abingdon, VA in 1844. She died in 1941 at the age of 97. They lived on North Clay Ave just south of the railroad tracks on a northwest corner of an intersection. The house was still standing the last time I went by (about two years ago).
I never knew my Great
Grandfather,
but I vividly remember my Great Grandmother. Her final days were in
what
was referred to as the "Old Peoples Home" now known as the Barton
Stone home on West Grove Street.
Their grave marker headstone is shown below.
It is located in the East Cemetery in Jacksonville.
