Cemetery transcription by members of the Jacksonville
Area
Genealogical and Historical Society
This long neglected burial ground is easily confused with Mr.
Vernon
Cemetery which is also known as Smith Cemetery and Morris Chapel
Cemetery.
Mt. Vernon Cemetery is about three miles northwest of this Smith
Cemetery.
Persons interested in Smith Cemetery burials should also refer to the
interments
made in Angel Cemetery which is less than a mile northwest of Smith
Cemetery.
Smith Cemetery is in the northwest quarter of Section 23 in Township 16
N Range 11 W. The site of Smith Cemetery is indicated by a cemetery
symbol
on page 121 of "Atlas Map of Morgan County, Illinois, 1872."
When Byron E. Gish of rural Route One, Beardstown, visited Smith
Cemetery
on March 1, 1977 to obtain the following tombstone readings, he found
the
cemetery in bad condition with the markers knocked over and scattered.
